Karen Nyberg - NASASocial As many of you know I’m a proud member of the NASA Social community, which brings together folks active on social media for behind-the-scenes and personalized access to NASA programs and people. I had a squeal moment recently. My son and I were selected to attend a NASA Social event at the Washington DC NASA HQ. Astronaut Karen Nyberg, who just returned from a mission at the International Space Station, talked about her mission as well as had interactive discussions with us.

Only 100 people from across the country were selected for this event and what made it even more special was it was youth-focused. The children in the audience asked Dr. Nyberg questions. And the questions were great! I was so excited to met Dr. Nyberg, but what excited me more was I could share the NASA Social experience with my son. Something special for both of us to remember. I cherish the time and adventures I have with him. I loved watching him and the other kids watch her intently and with razor sharp focus.

Events such as this do so much good. I don’t think people realize how much of NASA’s work positively impacts our daily life. For example, NASA tech is being used right now to find the downed plane. In order for innovation to continue, we need to spark the interest in STEM in our kids. Programs and the community engagement by NASA helps ensure that the next generation of innovators are sparked.
